The head of the Hadramout Tribal Alliance, Sheikh Amr bin Habreesh, on Sunday criticized a new presidential directive to create a development fund for Hadramout using local oil revenue, labeling it "corruption" that will "deepen centralization."
Speaking to alliance committees," Sheikh bin Habreesh dismissed the fund, announced by Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) member Faraj al-Bahsani, arguing that past experiences with such funds have been negative. He insisted that only self-governance is acceptable for Hadramout.
Al-Bahsani's directive, issued Saturday, mandates the local authority establish the fund to manage oil revenues for development and electricity, under his direct supervision and in line with PLC President Rashad al-Alimi's instructions. The directive includes strict measures for depositing revenues and monitoring fuel movement, with penalties for non-compliance.
While al-Bahsani emphasized an end to mismanagement and resource ambiguity, Sheikh bin Habreesh views the fund as a setback, reiterating the alliance's commitment to self-rule and warning of potential escalation.
