Journalist Mohammed al-Miyahi stood defiant but in shackles during his second hearing before a Houthi-affiliated court today, his lawyer reported. Al-Miyahi denied the charges against him, asserting that his writings had been misrepresented.
According to his lawyer, Ammar Ali Yassin, the prosecution presented an indictment and evidence, which al-Miyahi refuted. Al-Miyahi reportedly told the court, "I am a writer, literary figure, and author. My words have been distorted, as if you are talking about another person who has nothing to do with me." He also described his interrogation conditions in prison.
Yassin noted the prosecution's extreme claims, stating they alleged al-Miyahi's publications were responsible for Yemen's economic, environmental, social, political, security, legal, and even international problems. He quipped that only the ozone layer was spared blame.
The lawyer expressed concern over the prosecution's arguments but hoped the judge recognized al-Miyahi's innocence. The court adjourned the hearing, stating it would rule on release requests and other defenses before the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday.
Al-Miyahi has been detained for over eight months. He was seized by the Houthi group shortly after publishing an article critical of the group and its leader in September 2024. His initial hearing occurred on May 12th without his presence in the courtroom.
