A devastating fire tore through the Al-Tadhamon displacement camp in Yemen's Marib province on Monday, engulfing the shelters of five displaced families, including that of the camp manager. The Executive Unit for Displaced Persons Camps Management in Marib (EUCPM) has since launched an urgent appeal for humanitarian aid.
The blaze, detailed in a distress call from the EUCPM to Baran Press, not only destroyed the families' homes but also obliterated their belongings, leaving them exposed and without immediate shelter or emergency support. This incident marks the 66th fire to strike displacement camps in the region since January 2025.
These fires have tragically led to one fatality and 11 injuries, with women and children disproportionately affected. The cumulative toll also includes significant material losses and the displacement of dozens of families, as stated by the EUCPM.
The EUCPM expressed profound alarm over the relentless surge in fires across displacement camps. They highlighted the already dire humanitarian conditions endured by the displaced and the critical shortage of fire-resistant shelters capable of withstanding harsh weather. This ongoing crisis only intensifies the suffering of displaced individuals and puts their lives at even greater peril.
In response, the unit implored humanitarian and relief organizations to provide immediate emergency assistance to the affected families. Their appeal includes urgent calls for shelter, food, medicine, and the implementation of enhanced safety and prevention measures within the camps.
Compounding the severity of the situation, an official EUCPM report reveals that Marib's displacement camps experienced a staggering 208 fires in 2024 alone, resulting in four deaths and 40 injuries, with the majority being women, children, and the elderly.
