The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance (MASAM) announced on Thursday a significant milestone in its efforts to rid Yemen of deadly explosives, reporting the clearance of over 67 million square meters of land over the past seven years. The initiative also confirmed the removal of more than 500,000 mines planted by the Houthi group.

Extensive Demining Operations Underway
In a statement monitored by "Baran Press," MASAM revealed that since its launch in June 2018, it has successfully demined a precise total of 67,585,167 square meters of Yemeni territory, unearthing half a million deadly devices.

The recovered ordnance includes a wide array of anti-personnel mines, anti-tank mines, unexploded munitions, and improvised explosive devices. These were often indiscriminately laid across various regions, frequently targeting innocent civilians, including vulnerable populations such as children, women, and the elderly, and instilling fear within communities.

United Nations reports indicate that an estimated two million mines, planted by the Houthi group in areas under their control, have tragically led to the death or injury of over 20,000 civilians, with a disproportionate number being women and children.
