Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday, July 8th, 2024, that indirect negotiations are currently underway between Tehran and Washington, mediated by Oman. The ministry stated that details of the talks will be announced "in due time."

The announcement was made during a weekly press conference held by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani in Tehran, where he reviewed the country's foreign policy agenda and regional developments, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu.

Kanaani extended his congratulations to Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected as the ninth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He assured that the Foreign Ministry would "use all its resources to assist the elected president and achieve national interests."

During the conference, Kanaani addressed the negotiation process facilitated by Muscat between Iran and the US concerning regional developments and nuclear issues.

The Iranian official confirmed that "diplomatic channels between Iran and the United States are open," adding that "our diplomatic channels have conducted indirect talks through various means."

He further stated, "We are using all our diplomatic capabilities to protect the rights of the Iranian people, and we will announce the details in due time."

On May 29th, 2024, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri had previously confirmed ongoing communication between Iran and the US, as reported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Tasnim news agency.

Bagheri stated during a press conference following a government meeting that "we have an exchange of messages with the United States as before, and there has been no interruption in this direction." He added that efforts are ongoing to transfer frozen funds abroad, which are subject to US economic sanctions.

On May 19th, 2024, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irawani, acknowledged "indirect talks" between Iran and Washington in the Sultanate of Oman.

Irawani told reporters that "these negotiations are an ongoing process." He added that "the negotiations were not the first and will not be the last," according to the Russian news agency Sputnik, citing the Iranian news agency Mehr.

Last Saturday, reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian won the second round of Iran's presidential election with 16,384,403 votes, representing 53.6% of the electorate, according to Iranian media.

Pezeshkian believes in the importance of improving relations between Iran and Western countries, particularly the US, to resolve domestic problems. He has declared that reviving the nuclear deal will be a top priority for his government.
