An Omani maritime security center reported that a Comoros-flagged oil tanker capsized off the coast of Oman on Monday, July 15th. The vessel, identified as the "Prestige Falcon," was en route to the Yemeni port city of Aden.

The Omani Maritime Security Center, under the Ministry of Defence, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that search and rescue operations are underway to locate the 16 crew members, all of whom are still missing.

The center, in a tweet on its official X account, stated that the tanker capsized approximately 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah in the coastal province of Duqm. The statement added that search and rescue operations were activated in coordination with relevant authorities.

The center's statement on Tuesday identified the vessel as the "Prestige Falcon," carrying a crew of 16, including 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans. The statement confirmed that the crew remains missing, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

According to the shipping website MarineTraffic, the vessel was en route to the Yemeni port city of Aden. Data from the London Stock Exchange Group confirmed that the tanker's destination was indeed Aden, as reported by Reuters.

Shipping data revealed that the stricken vessel was a 117-meter-long oil product tanker built in 2007. Such smaller tankers are typically used for shorter voyages.

The port of Duqm is located on the southwestern coast of Oman, near major oil and gas mining projects in the Sultanate, including a major oil refinery that forms part of the expansive Duqm Industrial Zone, Oman's largest single economic project.

The cause of the incident remains unknown, and it is unclear whether the capsizing resulted in an oil spill.
