Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council Chairman, Rashad al-Alimi, met with a German delegation on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, to discuss peace efforts, regional developments including the Israeli attacks on Yemeni territory and the Palestinian people, and their implications for international security and peace.

The meeting, according to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, took place during a reception for Tobias Tunckel, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the German Foreign Ministry, and Hubert Jäger, the German Ambassador to Yemen.

Al-Alimi praised the German government's support for the Yemeni people and their leadership, as well as its efforts to alleviate the humanitarian suffering caused by the Houthis, a group designated as a terrorist organization by many countries.

He briefed the delegation on the latest developments in Yemen, including the ongoing efforts led by Saudi Arabia to launch a comprehensive political process that meets the aspirations of all Yemenis for a state based on equal citizenship and the rule of law.

Al-Alimi also addressed regional developments, including the Israeli attacks on Yemeni territory and the Palestinian people, and their impact on international security and peace. He stressed the importance of implementing international resolutions to achieve the aspirations of the region's peoples for security, stability, and peace.

The meeting also touched upon the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them across various fields. Al-Alimi sought German and European support for comprehensive economic reforms and to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The meeting comes amidst escalating tensions in the region. On Saturday, powerful explosions rocked the city of Hodeidah following airstrikes that the Houthi media claimed targeted oil storage facilities in the port. The attacks reportedly resulted in casualties.

Israel later claimed responsibility for the strikes. An Israeli military spokesperson stated that "our fighter jets carried out strikes on targets belonging to the Houthi regime in the Hodeidah port area in Yemen," describing them as "retaliation for Houthi attacks over the past months."

The situation further escalated on Friday when a drone crashed in the middle of Tel Aviv, killing one Israeli and injuring ten others. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, calling it "the first of its kind."
