The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Global Fund announced on Thursday, July 25, 2024, that they have delivered medical equipment valued at $2 million to support Yemen's struggling health system.
In a statement, the IOM said that it, in partnership with the internationally recognized Yemeni Ministry of Public Health and Population and the Global Fund, has "inaugurated the delivery of critical medical equipment to bolster the health care system in Yemen."
The IOM stated that the medical equipment, purchased for $2 million, includes two mobile X-ray units featuring "artificial intelligence technology."
The IOM's support also includes 20 blood gas analyzers, 30 infusion pumps, 2,200 oxygen cylinders, and 40 ventilators. These supplies will be distributed to public hospitals and health facilities across Yemen.
According to Matt Hooper, Acting Head of the IOM Mission in Yemen, "The medical equipment will strengthen the organization's commitment to improving health outcomes for some of the most vulnerable populations."
He stated that "Our partnership with the Global Fund and the Ministry of Public Health and Population underscores our commitment not only to addressing immediate needs but also to strengthening Yemen's health care infrastructure in the long term."
Hooper pointed out that Yemen is facing a severe health crisis, with approximately 17.8 million people requiring health assistance.
He noted that only 50% of hospitals across the country are fully or partially operational. Many face challenges such as staff shortages, inadequate supplies, and outdated equipment.
Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating war for nine years, which has destroyed most sectors, including the health system. The conflict has resulted in one of the world's most catastrophic humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.
