The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen reported on Thursday, August 1st, 2024, that over 158,000 people have been affected by floods and heavy rains in the country since the beginning of the year.
In a statement posted on the X platform, monitored by "Barran Press", OCHA stated that "heavy rains and floods in Yemen have affected more than 158,000 people since the beginning of 2024 until July 28th."
The statement added that the rains and floods "have resulted in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to 14 others during the same period," explaining that "humanitarian partners have responded to the needs of the most vulnerable groups across the country."
Yemen suffers from severe infrastructure weakness, exacerbating the impact of floods and adding to the misery of a population already struggling with fragile essential services due to the ongoing war for nearly nine years.
