Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque in Doha, Qatar, to participate in the funeral prayer for Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, who was laid to rest in Qatar on Friday. Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, in a strike attributed to Israel, sparking fears of a wider regional conflict.

Haniyeh's coffin arrived at the mosque before Friday prayers, having been transported to Doha from Tehran on Thursday afternoon. He was assassinated along with his personal bodyguard at his residence in the Iranian capital, according to AFP.

After Friday prayers, Haniyeh was buried in Qatar, where he resided with other members of Hamas' political bureau. The funeral prayer was held at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, the largest mosque in Doha.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led a prayer in absentia for Haniyeh following Friday prayers at a mosque in the Asian side of Istanbul.

In Yemen, hundreds of Yemenis held a prayer in absentia for Haniyeh in the Freedom Square of Taiz and in mosques in the city under government control. In Marib, also under government control, Yemenis performed the prayer in all mosques. Thousands also participated in the prayer in the capital Sana'a and other cities under the control of the Houthi group, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the international community.

In Lebanon, thousands of worshippers in cities and governorates across the country performed the prayer in absentia for Haniyeh and held a symbolic funeral for him and his companion in Beirut. After the Friday and in absentia prayers at the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in Beirut, mourners carried the symbolic coffins of Haniyeh and his companion, Wissam Abu Shaaban, amidst grief and anger. They chanted slogans like "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" as they carried the coffins to the Martyrs Cemetery in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp.

In Morocco, thousands of Moroccans performed the prayer in absentia for Haniyeh in mosques across the country, including in Casablanca, Oujda, and Nador.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians performed the prayer in absentia for Haniyeh at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank. The Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem, which is under Jordanian authority and responsible for the mosque's affairs, estimated that 30,000 people participated in Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque despite Israeli restrictions.

Sheikh Akram Sabri, the preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque, said in his Friday sermon: "The people of Jerusalem and from the pulpit of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque consider Ismail Haniyeh a martyr, and we ask Allah Almighty for his mercy." The worshippers responded with "Allahu Akbar" and "Praise be to Allah." Sheikh Sabri announced the performance of the prayer in absentia for Haniyeh after the end of Friday prayers.

Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed, said on Friday that his country rejects political assassinations in all their forms. He offered condolences to the family of Ismail Haniyeh.

Gargash praised Qatar's hosting of the funeral ceremony for Haniyeh in a tweet on the X platform. He said, "The hosting of the funeral of Ismail Haniyeh by our sister state of Qatar and its leadership in these difficult circumstances is a noble and appreciated stance."

He added, "Our sincere condolences to his family, and we ask Allah to grant them patience and solace."

Gargash stressed that "the UAE's position is firm and rejects violence and political assassination in all its forms and sources. There is no way to achieve stability except through justice, wisdom, and dialogue."

On Wednesday, Hamas and Iran announced the assassination of Haniyeh in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his residence in Tehran. The assassination occurred the day after Haniyeh participated in the inauguration ceremony of President Ebrahim Raisi.

Hamas and Iran have vowed to retaliate for Haniyeh's assassination, while international contacts and efforts continue to de-escalate the situation for fear of a wider conflict in the region.

Haniyeh's assassination comes as Israel, with US support, has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7th, resulting in over 130,000 Palestinian casualties, mostly children and women, and over 10,000 missing.

Tel Aviv continues its war, ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and orders from the International Court of Justice to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
