Heavy Rains Expected in 12 Yemeni Governorates over Next 72 Hours

A massive band of clouds is expected to bring heavy rainfall to 12 Yemeni governorates over the next 72 hours, according to numerical weather models. The clouds, originating from the Horn of Africa, are expected to reach the western and southern coasts of Yemen by Tuesday morning.

The heaviest rainfall is expected in the governorates of Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Ibb, Hajjah, Al Mahwit, Raymah, Sana'a, Dhamar, Amran, Al Bayda, Al Dhale'e, and Lahij, with the potential for flash flooding.

The clouds are expected to reach Bab el-Mandeb and Mocha (southwestern Yemen) at 5:00 AM on Tuesday, August 6th, bringing heavy rain to these areas as well as southern and western Lahj and western Taiz. By 11:00 AM, the rain is expected to reach Al Hudaydah, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in the afternoon and evening.

Other areas expected to receive scattered rainfall include:

  • Northern and Western Abyan
  • Northern and Eastern Taiz
  • Northern Lahj
  • Southern and Eastern Shabwah
  • Southern and Western Marib
  • Western Al Jawf
  • Southern Hadramawt

The rain is expected to spread eastward to include Marib city and its southern, northern, and western districts, as well as Al Hazm (the capital of Al Jawf), central and northern Shabwah, and southwestern Hadramawt, by Tuesday evening and after midnight.

On Wednesday, August 7th, heavy to moderate rainfall is expected to continue in Dhamar, Sana'a, Amran, Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Ibb, Al Dhale'e, Al Bayda, Lahij, Abyan, Raymah, Al Mahwit, and Hajjah, with scattered thunderstorms in western Al Jawf, eastern and southern Shabwah, and southern and western Marib.

The weather models indicate that the rain will continue after midnight on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, August 8th, in Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Ibb, Hajjah, Raymah, Al Mahwit, and Al Dhale'e. By Thursday evening, the rain is expected to spread eastward to include Sana'a, Dhamar, Al Bayda, Marib, Amran, Sa'dah, Al Jawf, and Shabwah, with scattered thunderstorms in Abyan, Lahj, and southern Hadramawt.

Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to take precautions and stay informed about the latest weather updates.
