A leaked document reveals that the Iran-backed Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization, has seized 10,000 "bricks" (a local unit of measurement) of land belonging to Sana'a University, a state-owned institution, and granted it to a "loyalist" under the guise of "medical investments."
According to the circulating document, which Barran Press has reviewed, the head of the so-called "Supreme Political Council," a Houthi entity, Mehdi al-Mashat, has ordered the appropriation of 10,000 bricks of Sana'a University land for an unidentified individual named "Abdu Ali Hadi" to develop medical investments.
The directive, issued in late May, instructs Houthi leaders controlling the General Authority for Land, Survey, and Urban Planning to grant the same individual another 40,000 bricks in the Bani Matar area west of Sana'a, based on a proposal from the individual who was granted the university land.
The Houthis' seizure of Sana'a University land has sparked outrage among Yemenis, particularly academics, who view it as a continuation of their pattern of targeting state assets and vital institutions.
Academics argue that targeting Sana'a University's land and facilities signifies a systematic effort to undermine the educational and academic process, transforming these institutions into platforms for promoting the Houthi agenda and graduating thousands of their followers and supporters.
Previously, Houthi leaders issued similar directives to transfer portions of Sana'a University land, buildings, and facilities to the Endowment Authority, a parallel Houthi entity. At the time, academics and students denounced this as an attempt to target the university, seize its assets, and dismantle its infrastructure.
