Security forces in Yemen's southwestern Taiz province have announced the apprehension of several individuals linked to Houthi militias, accusing them of involvement in "terrorist crimes." The arrests followed a security campaign in the Al-Shamayateen district.
In a statement issued after a meeting chaired by Governor Nabil Shamsan, the Taiz Security Committee reported that joint security forces successfully detained a number of elements collaborating with the Iranian-backed Houthi group.
The committee further elaborated that the arrested individuals are suspected of committing numerous acts of violence, including murder and sabotage targeting both public and private property. They are also accused of resisting law enforcement authorities in Aden, the country's declared interim capital, as well as in Taiz and Lahj provinces.
According to the security committee, the apprehended Houthi-linked elements were allegedly planning to target security, military, and civilian leaders, as well as government facilities in Taiz and other liberated provinces.
The statement also highlighted a significant connection between the arrested cell and the killing of World Food Program employee Moayad Hameidi in Al-Turbah city in July 2023.
During the security operation, joint forces reportedly seized explosives, medium and light weapons, and car bombs prepared for sabotage operations. These materials were discovered within the residences of the apprehended individuals.
The Taiz Security Committee affirmed that relevant authorities will continue to take necessary legal measures to refer these "criminal elements" to justice. The committee also pledged to pursue any remaining fugitives to ensure they face legal consequences.
The statement concluded by commending the security forces for their recent successes in apprehending and thwarting numerous terrorist plots aimed at destabilizing public peace and terrorizing civilians.
