The death toll from floods and torrential rains that have battered several Yemeni provinces in recent days has risen to 61 dead and missing, with dozens injured. A UN official has described the scale of the disaster and humanitarian needs as "massive."

While the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported 57 fatalities and missing persons on Monday, the Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib Governorate confirmed four deaths and 10 injuries resulting from heavy rains and storms that hit the province on Sunday.

The UN agency stated in a press release that the floods, which began in late June and intensified in early August, have claimed the lives of at least 57 people, with others missing and injured. The floods have also affected 34,000 families.

The Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps reported that the heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds in Marib Governorate resulted in the deaths of four displaced persons and injuries to 10 others, including children and women.

The unit indicated that the floods caused by heavy rains had severely impacted IDP camps, damaging the shelters of 7,179 displaced families, including 2,973 shelters that were completely destroyed and 4,206 that were partially damaged in several camps across the governorate.

In this regard, the Acting Head of the UN Mission in Yemen, Matt Huber, warned that "without significant and sustained support from donors and international partners, the ability to meet the needs of those affected will remain extremely limited."

The UN official described the scale of the disaster and humanitarian needs as "massive."

In recent days, floods have ravaged several provinces, particularly Hodeidah, Taiz, and Hajjah in the west, leading to the deaths of 45 people and the disappearance of 12 others. Thousands have been displaced, and over 93,000 people have been affected, according to statistics released on Thursday by the Yemeni Red Crescent Society.

On Sunday, Marib Governorate (northeastern Yemen) experienced heavy rains, severe thunderstorms accompanied by winds, hail, and lightning that lasted for hours, causing significant damage to IDP camps and public services.

On Thursday, the government issued an "urgent plea" to international donors to assist in addressing the damage caused by the floods, which have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and the displacement of thousands of families.

Yemen suffers from severe infrastructure weakness, making the impact of the floods even worse for a population already struggling with fragile essential services due to the repercussions of a civil war that began nearly 10 years ago.
