The Southern Transitional Council (STC) reported on Friday, August 16, 2024, that 12 of its soldiers were killed in a suicide bombing that targeted a military barracks in Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen) earlier that morning.

STC spokesperson Mohammed Al-Naqib stated that "a terrorist attack using a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber targeted a barracks of our forces in Modya District, Abyan Governorate."

Meanwhile, the German Press Agency (dpa) quoted a source as saying that an apparent suicide car bomb attack targeted a supply depot for the 3rd Support and Reinforcement Brigade, affiliated with the STC, in Modya District, Abyan Governorate.

The source added that "the terrorist attack, carried out by detonating the car bomb, resulted in the deaths and injuries of 22 soldiers."

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but militants linked to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula have intensified their attacks on military installations in Yemen.
