Marib, Yemen – August 19, 2024—According to the meteorological department, a low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy thunderstorms to large parts of Marib Governorate in northeastern Yemen. The warning comes as the region continues to experience torrential rains for the second consecutive week.
Following the weather forecast, the Marib Civil Defense Police issued a statement urging citizens, particularly those residing in valleys and near flood channels, to evacuate immediately. The statement emphasized avoiding these areas to safeguard lives and property.
The heavy rains have already caused significant damage to public and private infrastructure, particularly impacting displaced populations. A previous report by the Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib stated that last Sunday's rainfall resulted in the deaths and injuries of 42 displaced individuals and damage to over 12,000 families.
A report released by the Executive Unit on Sunday, August 17, revealed that the human toll from the rains reached 8 fatalities – 4 women, a child, and 3 men – and 34 injuries. The report further indicated that floods and strong winds caused complete damage to approximately 4,000 displaced families and partial damage to 9,000 families residing in 111 IDP camps in Madinat Marib, Al-Wadi, Rghwan in the north, and Harib in the south.
