The National Center for Meteorology and Early Warning has issued a warning for heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds in 11 Yemeni governorates over the next 24 hours, starting Friday, August 23, 2024. Eight other governorates are expected to experience varying levels of rainfall.
According to the daily bulletin, monitored by "Barran Press", the center predicts partly cloudy to cloudy skies with heavy thunderstorms, hail, and strong downdrafts in the mountainous regions of Saada, Hajjah, Mahweet, Amran, Sana'a, Dhamar, Remah, Ibb, Taiz, Dhale, and Al-Bayda.
The center also anticipates thunderstorms of varying intensity in Mahra, Hadhramaut, Shabwah, Al-Jawf, and Marib. Coastal areas are expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy with the possibility of thunderstorms in parts of Abyan, Aden, Lahj, Tihama Plain, and the coasts of Hajjah, Hodeidah, and Taiz.
Winds are expected to be very strong around the Socotra archipelago, exceeding 45 knots, with scattered rainfall. Moderate to strong winds are expected in the Gulf of Aden and along the eastern and southern coasts during the day.
In desert areas, the center predicts partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms and moderate to active winds, which could cause dust and sand storms.
The center strongly advises citizens in areas expected to receive rainfall to exercise extreme caution and avoid valleys, flood channels, and seek shelter from thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail.
The center also warns of reduced visibility due to rainfall, dense cumulus clouds, and potential rock slides. It urges relevant government agencies to take necessary measures to protect lives and property and to monitor its bulletins and reports.
Seafarers and fishermen are advised to be cautious due to rough seas and high waves around the Socotra archipelago, the Gulf of Aden, and the eastern and southern coasts.
Yemen has been experiencing heavy rains, thunderstorms, and floods since the beginning of this month, resulting in dozens of deaths and significant damage to public and private property.
