The internationally recognized Yemeni government on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, expressed its "full solidarity" with Egypt and strongly condemned Israeli statements regarding the Philadelphi Corridor, which included claims aimed at justifying ongoing Israeli violations of international law and norms.
A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published by the official Saba news agency, affirmed Yemen's unwavering support for Egypt in the face of provocative statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The statement rejected the Israeli military presence in the Philadelphi Corridor and the Rafah crossing.
The statement reiterated Yemen's full support for Egyptian efforts to achieve a ceasefire and end the suffering of the Palestinian people. It called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities and achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people for peace, a dignified life, the establishment of their independent state, and East Jerusalem as its capital.
On Monday, September 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a press conference that achieving the goals of the war on Gaza "passes through the Philadelphi Corridor," asserting that Tel Aviv will not withdraw from it.
Netanyahu added, "The moment we left the Philadelphi Corridor on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, there was no barrier to the massive infiltration of weapons, military materials, and machinery needed for rocket production and tunnel digging."
He continued, "All of this under the auspices, guidance, and funding of Iran. Gaza has become a huge threat to the State of Israel because there was no barrier (on the Philadelphi Corridor)."
In response, Egypt, in a statement by its Foreign Ministry, expressed its rejection of Netanyahu's statements, deeming them "an attempt to obstruct the achievement of a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange deal in the Gaza Strip."
