The European maritime task force, Operation Aspides, announced on Sunday, September 15th, 2024, the launch of a complex multi-stage operation to salvage the burning oil tanker "MV Sounion," which was attacked by Houthi forces in the Red Sea last August. The operation involves towing the vessel to a safe location.

In a statement posted on X, Operation Aspides confirmed that tugboats have successfully been attached to the "Sounion" and are currently towing it to safety. The task force emphasized that by providing protection for this operation, they are contributing to both maritime and environmental security.

On Saturday, September 14th, a source within the Greek Ministry of Defense, speaking to Agence France-Presse, confirmed the initiation of the towing operation. The "MV Sounion," which was attacked by the Houthi group, internationally designated as a terrorist organization, off the coast of Yemen in August, poses a significant environmental threat.

Earlier this month, a rescue attempt for the "MV Sounion" was unsuccessful, with participating private companies deeming the operation "unsafe."

The tanker, carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, caught fire and lost propulsion after being attacked on August 21st. Its crew of 25 was evacuated the following day by a French frigate participating in Operation Aspides.

Days after the attack, the Houthi group claimed responsibility, stating they had detonated explosives on the ship's deck, leading to renewed fires.

Operation Aspides confirmed that fires were still burning on the vessel as of September 12th, but there were no signs of oil leaking from the main storage tanks.

For months, the Houthis, who control vast swathes of Yemen, have targeted vessels they believe are linked to Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom, justifying their actions as solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip amidst the ongoing Israeli conflict.
