The Houthi militia, designated as a terrorist group by several countries, claimed on Monday, September 16, 2024, to have shot down a US MQ-9 drone over the Yemeni province of Dhamar.

In a statement released by their military spokesperson Yahya Saree, the Houthis stated that the drone was carrying out hostile missions in the airspace of Dhamar province. They further claimed that this was the third drone downed within a week and the tenth MQ-9 they have successfully brought down since the start of the conflict in Gaza.

Earlier in the day, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the destruction of a Houthi missile system in Yemen. In a statement posted on X,and seen by "Barran Press", CENTCOM stated that "over the past 24 hours, USCENTCOM forces successfully destroyed one missile system in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen."

Since last November, the Houthis have continued their attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Aden using missiles and drones. These attacks have led to increased maritime insurance costs and prompted many international shipping companies to opt for the significantly longer route around the southern tip of Africa.

In response to the Houthi attacks and to protect maritime navigation, the US formed a multinational coalition in December 2023. US forces have since carried out periodic strikes against Houthi military targets.

The conflicting claims from both sides highlight the ongoing tension and escalation in the region. The Houthis' alleged drone downing comes amidst a backdrop of increased US military activity in the area, raising concerns about a potential escalation of the conflict.
