On September 21, 2024, the Egyptian government emphasized that the security and stability of Yemen, as well as the safety of maritime navigation in the Red Sea, are top priorities for Egypt's national security and for the broader Arab region.
This statement was made during a meeting in Washington, D.C., between Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Ati and U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking, as reported by the Yemen News Agency, Saba.
During the meeting, Minister Abdel-Ati highlighted the direct link between Red Sea security and stability in the Horn of Africa. He reiterated Egypt's support for Yemen's legitimate government, the independence of its institutions, and the unity and territorial integrity of the country.
According to the official spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Tamim Khalaf, Minister Abdel-Ati affirmed Egypt's backing for all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, in line with the Gulf Initiative, its executive mechanisms, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and UN Security Council Resolution 2216. He stressed the importance of addressing the aspirations of the Yemeni people and alleviating their humanitarian suffering.
Abdel-Ati also underscored the importance of the international community's role in mitigating the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni population and providing necessary support to fund UN relief programs in the country.
He pointed out Egypt's commitment to supporting UN-related efforts and highlighted Egypt's ongoing initiatives to provide various forms of assistance to the Yemeni people, particularly in the areas of medical and food aid.
