On September 24, 2024, Rashad Al-Alimi, President of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, met with U.S. Special Envoy Timothy Lenderking to discuss the results of recent communications aimed at reducing tensions in Yemen and the broader region.

The meeting took place in New York City, where Al-Alimi is attending the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the Yemeni News Agency, Saba, Al-Alimi received a briefing from Lenderking on the outcomes of his recent efforts to de-escalate the situation in Yemen. The discussion included options for encouraging the Iran-backed Houthi group, classified as a terrorist organization, to engage seriously with regional and international initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The meeting, which was also attended by Council member Othman Majali, addressed the current developments in Yemen, including the ongoing terrorist activities of the Houthis and their severe violations of human rights. The participants also reviewed the efforts of allies and partners to initiate a comprehensive political process under United Nations auspices.

Additionally, the conversation touched on coordinated efforts with the international community to secure the release of United Nations staff and civil society leaders kidnapped by the Iran-supported militia.

On September 21, Al-Alimi, along with Council members Aidarus Al-Zubaidi and Othman Majali, arrived in New York to participate in the high-level Future Summit sponsored by the United Nations and to attend the General Assembly sessions that commenced on Tuesday.

Yemen continues to face severe humanitarian and economic challenges due to the ongoing conflict, which began when the Houthi group seized control of the capital, Sana'a, on September 21, 2014.
