On September 30, 2024, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the United Nations General Assembly to recommend the use of force if the Security Council fails to halt Israeli attacks in Gaza and Lebanon.

Following a government meeting in Ankara, Erdogan stated, "The Assembly must swiftly use its authority to recommend the use of force, as it did in the 1950 Uniting for Peace resolution."

He called on Islamic nations to take economic, diplomatic, and political measures against Israel to pressure it into accepting a ceasefire, warning that "Israel's attacks will also target them if they are not stopped soon."

According to General Assembly Resolution 377 (1950), known as "Uniting for Peace," the Assembly can recommend collective measures for maintaining or restoring international peace and security when the Security Council is unable to act due to a lack of consensus among its five permanent members with veto power.

Typically, the Security Council decides when and where to deploy UN peacekeeping operations, but historically, the General Assembly has intervened when the Council is deadlocked, as seen in 1956 when the Assembly established the first emergency force (UNEF) in the Middle East.

The Security Council first authorized the use of force in 1950 to secure the withdrawal of North Korean troops from South Korea.

Erdogan previously accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Lebanon, describing its attacks, which have resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties, as "brutal." He pointed to the strikes targeting Hezbollah, which led to the deaths of several leaders, including Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.

In a post on his official X account, Erdogan remarked, "Lebanon and the Lebanese people are the new targets of the genocide, occupation, and invasion policy that Israel has been implementing since October 7," referring to Israeli military operations in Gaza.
