The European Union's mission in the Red Sea, known as "Aspides," announced on Monday that it has successfully secured the passage of several commercial vessels through the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
In a statement shared on platform X, which was reviewed by Barran Press, Aspides explained that its efforts are focused on securing vital maritime trade routes to ensure the flow of goods and supplies to the Mediterranean region.
The Houthi group, designated as a terrorist organization by international bodies, has been conducting attacks on vessels they claim are linked to Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom since last year. This ongoing threat has led many shipping companies to reroute their operations around the Cape of Good Hope instead of through the Red Sea.
The Aspides mission was launched on February 19, 2024, as a military operation by the European Union aimed at protecting ships from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
