On November 4, 2024, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the country is drafting a resolution to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly, proposing Israel's expulsion from the UN if it continues to violate international law in relation to Palestine.
In a statement regarding the resolution delivered in the Malaysian Parliament, Ibrahim noted that Malaysia has joined the "core group" that prepared the resolution, which seeks an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice concerning Israel's obligations to allow the activities of UN organizations.
He explained that if the resolution is accepted by the UN General Assembly, it would pave the way for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to continue providing aid to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
Ibrahim highlighted that discussions surrounding the resolution are ongoing and that it will be submitted to the UN General Assembly soon.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, supported by the US, has been accused of committing genocide in Gaza, resulting in over 145,000 Palestinian casualties, most of whom are women and children, along with more than 10,000 reported missing. This has led to widespread destruction and famine, claiming the lives of many children and the elderly, marking one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally.
Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues its military operations, disregarding International Court of Justice orders to take measures to prevent genocide and improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
