Republican candidate Donald Trump announced his victory in the U.S. presidential election early Wednesday, November 6, 2024, defeating Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.
In a speech delivered to supporters in Florida, Trump proclaimed, “We made history tonight. Look at what happened; isn’t this incredible?” He expressed gratitude to his audience and the American people for electing him as the "47th president of the United States."
Trump highlighted his wins in key states, including Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Alaska, stating, “This will lead us to approximately 350 votes in the Electoral College,” adding that he also secured the popular vote.
Additionally, Trump celebrated Republican gains in the Senate, expressing joy at the victory amid cheers from supporters who had waited for hours to hear his address. He remarked, “The victories are amazing... Nobody expected this... Thank you, and it appears we will also maintain control of the House of Representatives.”
Republicans regained control of the U.S. Senate after winning two seats previously held by Democrats in West Virginia and Ohio, according to the Associated Press.
As Trump took the stage, he had accumulated 267 Electoral College votes compared to Harris’s 214, placing him just three votes shy of the 270 needed to officially secure the presidency.
