The Yemeni Teachers' Union in Taiz Province (southwestern Yemen) has formally requested a salary increase of 30,000 Yemeni rials for teachers, aligning their pay with that of educators in Marib and several other provinces.
In a memo addressed to Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan on November 6, 2024, reviewed by Barran Press, the union reiterated its demands for higher salaries and additional incentives to help teachers cope with the ongoing rise in living costs. This request follows multiple previous appeals that have gone unanswered.
The union urged local authorities in Taiz to raise teachers' salaries similarly to what local government leaders have implemented in Marib, Hadramout, Al-Mahrah, and Aden, where increases have ranged between 30,000 and 60,000 rials.
While the internationally recognized Yemeni government continues to distribute salaries to various state employees, the ongoing decline of the Yemeni rial against foreign currencies has exacerbated the financial struggles of public workers, prompting many to abandon their jobs for the private sector.
In Houthi-controlled areas, the group has halted salary payments for state employees, particularly teachers, since 2016, obstructing the Yemeni government's efforts to resume salary distribution in the health and education sectors.
In December 2018, the Yemeni government and the Houthis reached a UN-sponsored agreement to pay salaries from the revenues of the Hodeidah port. However, the Houthis subsequently seized control of the central bank in Hodeidah, appropriating port revenues for their own benefit.
