On November 10, 2024, the Yemeni Coalition for Monitoring Human Rights Violations (Rasd Coalition) reported the details of a horrific crime involving the abduction and brutal assault of 9-year-old Jannat Tahir Al-Sayagi by a Houthi recruit. The coalition praised her father's bravery in confronting the perpetrators.
In a report published on its website, reviewed by Barran Press, the coalition detailed that Jannat was kidnapped and subjected to "savage rape" in June 2024 by a member of the Houthi group, which is internationally recognized as a terrorist organization. The coalition has closely monitored the case from the outset and documented the crime in coordination with Jannat's father.
The report stated that the assailant threatened Jannat with death if she attempted to flee after repeated assaults, but she managed to escape to her home and inform her mother.
Following a medical examination that confirmed the assault, Jannat's father faced significant obstacles in seeking justice due to the assailant's influence within the Houthi group. The family endured immense pressure to withdraw the case, including financial offers and proposals for Jannat to marry her attacker. Nevertheless, her father stood firm against these threats and sought support through social media.
Despite the challenges, he successfully obtained a 15-year prison sentence for the perpetrator, although the family deemed the punishment insufficient and called for the death penalty. The Rasd Coalition commended the father's courage, noting that he attempted to appeal the decision but faced verbal threats of imprisonment from the judge, rendering him another victim of a flawed justice system.
Currently, the coalition reported that Jannat's family lives under constant threat and undue influence that undermines justice. The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring this case and documenting all violations against children in Yemen, calling on the international community to act to protect children and provide a safe environment for them.
In mid-June, human rights sources revealed that a man named Ahmad Hassan Najad was implicated in the abduction and sexual assault of Jannat in the Artil area of the Sanhan District in Sana'a Governorate, leveraging Houthi connections to obscure the crime and evade accountability.
