On November 19, 2024, the European Union Naval Force operation in the Red Sea, known as "Aspides," announced that it has successfully executed over 300 protection missions for commercial vessels, ensuring their safe passage through the region during the past nine months since the operation's launch.
In a statement released on platform X, which was reviewed by "Barran Press," Aspides celebrated its nine-month anniversary of operations in the Red Sea. The statement highlighted that "thanks to the tireless dedication of our personnel, we have successfully addressed numerous challenges and enhanced our role in safeguarding global common goods."
The operation included a video showcasing the successful escort and close protection of commercial vessels navigating the southern Red Sea, an area reportedly facing attacks from Houthi forces.
Aspides reiterated its commitment to continue its mission of preserving and enhancing maritime security and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region, prioritizing the safety of sailors and the protection of commercial vessels.
For over a year, Houthi forces have targeted ships they allege are linked to Israeli, U.S., and U.K. interests, prompting many shipping companies to reroute to the Cape of Good Hope instead of transiting the Red Sea.
Launched on February 19, 2024, the EU operation Aspides is a naval military mission aimed at protecting vessels from attacks by the Houthi group, which is internationally classified as a terrorist organization. The operation is based in Larissa, Greece, and its fleet consists of warships and frigates manned by crews from 21 European countries. The mission is defensive in nature, allowing the use of force only to protect commercial vessels or itself but prohibits targeting Houthi ground positions.
