Marib, Yemen – On Saturday, November 23, 2024, Anthony Heward, the military advisor to the UN Secretary-General's special envoy for Yemen, visited the headquarters of the "Masam" mine clearance project in Marib, northeastern Yemen.
During his visit, Heward received a briefing from Ratif Horne, the deputy director and operations manager of the project, on its activities since its inception in mid-2018. Horne reported that the "Masam" teams have successfully removed 469,576 landmines, explosive devices, and unexploded ordnance since the project began.
Heward emphasized the critical role of the "Masam" project in protecting civilian lives and securing large areas of land in Yemen, despite the significant challenges posed by landmines. He underscored the importance of continuing such humanitarian initiatives to achieve stability in Yemen and safeguard the lives of its citizens.
