On Sunday, November 24, 2024, the Journalists Protection Network was officially launched in Yemen, bringing together 12 local and international organizations dedicated to safeguarding journalists and promoting freedom of expression in the country.
The network aims to enhance coordination and collaboration among its members to ensure the safety and independence of journalists, as well as to support media institutions and the broader rights to free expression and opinion in Yemen.
Among the organizations involved are six international and regional entities: Article 19, Rory Peck Trust, Global Media Defense Fund (GMDF), Freedom House, American Center for Justice, and Women Journalists Without Chains. The network also includes six local organizations: the National Organization of Yemeni Reporters "SADA," the Protection Center for Human Rights, the Free Media Center for Investigative Journalism, the Abductees Mothers Association, the Peace Paths Foundation, and the Yemen Future Foundation for Cultural and Media Development.
The establishment of the network follows a project aimed at ensuring the legal protection of journalists, led by the National Organization for Yemeni Reporters "SADA" in collaboration with UNESCO and the Global Media Defense Fund. This initiative seeks to provide Yemeni journalists with rapid and secure access to comprehensive protection services and legal counsel.
The launch event featured notable attendees, including Nejib Mukni, Communication and Information Officer at UNESCO’s Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, Maha Assablani, Yemen Program Officer at IMS, and Mohammed Mandour, Middle East Researcher at the Committee to Protect Journalists, along with representatives from partner organizations.
