STOCKHOLM, November 25, 2024 – The Swedish government announced on Monday the suspension of all humanitarian and development aid to Yemen by the end of 2025, citing the escalating "destructive actions" of the Houthi group, internationally designated a terrorist organization.

According to a statement released by the Swedish government, reviewed by Barran Press,  the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) will cease operations in northern Yemen by the beginning of next year, with aid to southern governorates suspended by June 30, 2025.

The decision, the government explained, is a direct response to the increasing acts of sabotage by the Houthis, including the kidnapping of UN personnel and attacks in the Red Sea that have hampered aid delivery verification.

Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Benjamin Dousa, stated that Sweden had provided approximately 287 million Swedish kronor (USD 26 million) in humanitarian aid to Yemen, covering essential needs such as food, shelter, and medicine. He emphasized that the decision aims to protect Swedish taxpayers' money and prevent aid misuse.

Sida has been tasked with concluding its development efforts in northern regions by early 2025, with southern regions to follow by mid-year.

The decision follows a sustained campaign of arrests by the Houthis since late May, targeting dozens of employees from international and UN agencies, as well as foreign embassies in Sana'a.
