On Sunday, December 1, 2024, Tariq Saleh, a member of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, stated that they fought the Houthi group, listed internationally as a terrorist organization, in the heart of the capital, Sana'a, using their personal weapons. This was in the aftermath of the December 2 uprising called by former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was subsequently killed.
In a post on X (monitored by Barran Press), Tariq Saleh remarked, “On December 2, former President Ali Abdullah Saleh led a revolution against the Iranian-backed gang in the heart of the capital, where we fought with our personal weapons despite all the risks.”
He added, “We lost our leadership in the battle, but we continued the revolution from within the Yemeni legitimacy, supported by our brothers, and joined by our kin from Al-Tahama and the Southern Giants.”
Saleh also noted, “We remember December 2 and celebrate the seventh with the liberation of Al-Khoukha, which became the capital of Al-Hudaydah and a national platform from the heart of Al-Tahama, where thousands of people gathered—whether fighters against the Houthis or displaced—waiting to celebrate the recovery of Al-Hudaydah and the liberation of Sana'a.”
On December 2, 2017, the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh called on his supporters to stage an armed uprising against the Houthis, following escalating tensions between them. This led to violent clashes in several neighborhoods of Sana'a between Saleh-aligned forces and Houthi militants, culminating in the Houthis announcing Saleh's assassination after they stormed his home on December 4, 2017.
