On Monday, December 2, 2024, the United States reaffirmed that its policy towards Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains unchanged.

In remarks to reporters, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller described Assad as a "blood-stained dictator" but declined to specify whether the US seeks to remove him from power.

Miller emphasized that the US aims to see a de-escalation in violence and the protection of civilians in Syria. Ultimately, he expressed a desire for a political process that allows the Syrian people to choose their own leaders.
