On the ninth day of the "Deterrence of Aggression" operation, Syrian opposition forces announced their entry into the strategically significant city of Hama after gaining control of additional towns and military sites in the northern countryside. The Syrian Ministry of Defense confirmed that its forces have redeployed outside the city to protect civilian lives and avoid involving them in the ongoing battles.
In a video statement, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, a leader in the opposition military operations management, declared that the fighters have begun entering Hama, emphasizing that “the opening of Hama is a victory without vengeance.”
The opposition forces reported the liberation of Hama Military Airport and Central Hama Prison, announcing the release of prisoners. They also confirmed their entry into several neighborhoods, including Al-Arbaeen, Al-Mazarib, and Al-Sawa'iq.
As the opposition forces advanced, they noted that government troops were retreating toward the western districts of Hama. Meanwhile, the Syrian Ministry of Defense reiterated its commitment to civilian safety by moving its troops out of the city to prevent further civilian casualties.
Earlier this week, Damascus stated that it had sent substantial military reinforcements to the city to counter opposition attacks, while Syrian and Russian airstrikes continued to target areas in Idlib and Aleppo, resulting in additional casualties.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the assault led by what it termed "terrorists" in Syria, reaffirming its strong support for the "authorities in Damascus" and indicating that the guarantors of the Astana process regarding Syria are in constant communication amid the escalating tensions.
Hama's strategic importance lies in its central location, connecting all four cardinal directions of Syria (east-west and north-south). It hosts sensitive military and security installations, including Hama Military Airport, military depots, and various army brigades.
