On December 15, 2024, the Arab Parliament expressed its full support for the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen, led by Rashad al-Alimi, in its efforts to preserve Yemen's unity and stability. This statement was made during the second session of the first legislative term of the Arab Parliament, chaired by President Mohammed Al-Yamahi.
In a statement addressing the current political developments in Yemen, the Arab Parliament reiterated its backing for the Council's efforts to fulfill the aspirations of the Yemeni people for security and stability, aiming to end the Houthi coup, which is internationally classified as a terrorist organization, and to restore state institutions.
The Parliament emphasized its support for the constitutional legitimacy of the Republic of Yemen and for international and regional efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace, based on agreed-upon national, regional, and international references.
Additionally, the Arab Parliament welcomed the "Aden Declaration," which announced the formation of a national coalition of political parties and components, describing it as a significant step towards unifying the national front and collaborating to restore the state and end the Houthi coup.
In its statement, the Arab Parliament condemned "in the strongest terms" the brutal crime committed by the Houthi militia, which targeted a crowded market in the Maqbana district of Taiz on December 2, 2024, resulting in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to eight others. The statement noted that this act adds to a series of crimes that highlight the militia's disregard for human life and the suffering of the Yemeni people.
The Arab Parliament also called for urgent support and assistance for the Yemeni people amid what it described as a "difficult" economic situation, exacerbated by the Houthi coup and attacks on oil and gas export facilities, which have inflicted significant economic losses by disrupting the country's key resources.
In his remarks during the session, Sheikh Alawi Al-Basha, a member of the Yemeni Shura Council and head of the Human Rights Committee in the Arab Parliament, praised the political committee's report on the situation in Yemen. He affirmed Yemen's right, as represented by the Presidential Leadership Council, to take necessary actions to restore the state.
Al-Basha emphasized the need for a political solution but noted the lack of a genuine partner in the political process, pointing out that the Houthis do not recognize any other party or the Yemeni government and are unwilling to surrender state institutions or return military weapons.
He urged that the report on the Yemeni situation should include support for the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia in its efforts to assist the Yemeni government both developmentally and militarily, highlighting the coalition's role in preventing the Yemeni government from collapsing and addressing the ongoing crisis.
