According to the state-run Saba News Agency, the Public Health and Population Office in Yemen’s northeastern province of Marib announced on Thursday, December 19, 2024, that 686,430 people have been vaccinated against cholera as part of an emergency immunization campaign.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Abadi, Director-General of the Health Office, stated that the vaccination campaign in Marib City and Al-Wadi Districts achieved an 81% coverage rate, targeting a total of 842,231 individuals.
Al-Abadi commended the efforts of the health teams who executed the immunization drive, which was accompanied by an extensive awareness campaign.
The emergency cholera vaccination campaign, launched on December 7, aimed to vaccinate 800,000 people, aged one year and above, across the targeted areas. The operation involved 1,632 health workers and supervisors organized into 757 fixed and mobile vaccination teams.
Simultaneously, teams of health educators carried out a community awareness campaign using loudspeakers, mobile vehicles, posters, brochures, and educational messages. This initiative sought to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination in preventing the deadly disease and curbing its spread.
The success of the campaign marks a critical step in combating cholera in a region grappling with a fragile healthcare system due to years of conflict.
