On December 31, 2024, Yemen's internationally recognized Ministry of Interior released an official statistic revealing that traffic accidents resulted in the deaths of 663 individuals across various age groups throughout the year. This figure marks a significant increase in fatalities compared to previous years.
According to Major General Omar Bamshmus, head of the Traffic Police, the year 2024 saw a 30% rise in traffic-related deaths, with a total of 4,924 casualties reported, including 663 fatalities and 4,261 injuries, of which 1,532 were classified as severe.
Bamshmus noted that the financial losses due to traffic accidents in the past year amounted to approximately 5 billion and 38 million Yemeni rials, reflecting an increase of over 3 billion rials compared to 2023.
During this period, traffic police in the liberated provinces recorded 70,903 traffic violations and witnessed 4,764 accidents. The distribution of these incidents varied by region, with Marib province leading with 1,704 accidents, accounting for 35% of the total. Taiz followed with 610 accidents (13%), and Lahij with 443 (9%).
