TAIZ, Yemen — On January 4, 2025, the National Commission for the Investigation of Allegations of Human Rights Violations held discussions with the military leadership of the Taiz axis regarding ongoing investigations into alleged abuses by army personnel, including the recent incident involving Saif Al-Sharabi.
During a meeting between Judge Ishraq Al-Maqatari, a member and spokesperson for the commission, and Major General Khaled Fadhel, the commander of the Taiz axis, the necessity of accountability for those implicated in human rights violations was emphasized. Al-Maqatari asserted the importance of adhering to accountability measures within the military units.
General Fadhel outlined recent steps taken by the Taiz axis to protect civilians amid resumed hostilities following Houthi attacks. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to pursue individuals within the military who have committed offenses, reaffirming the axis's commitment to safeguarding Taiz from Houthi aggressions and ensuring the protection of citizens in liberated districts.
In a related development, the commission conducted a field visit to the residence of Saif Al-Sharabi, who was shot dead by an armed man affiliated with the army outside his home in the Al-Masbah neighborhood of Taiz. The commission stated it is investigating the unlawful killing of Al-Sharabi, a case that has garnered significant public attention since the beginning of the year.
The commission interviewed Al-Sharabi's wife, his daughter, journalist Ghadeer Al-Sharabi, and several witnesses, while also examining the crime scene.
On Friday, Taiz security forces announced the arrest of a second suspect in the case, along with eight others linked to the perpetrator, who remains at large, including the suspect's father.
