PORT SUDAN, Sudan — On January 4, 2025, Sudan expressed its support for a Turkish initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis between Khartoum and Abu Dhabi. This announcement came from Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf following a meeting between Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister and Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

Yusuf stated that the Sudanese government officially endorses the initiative led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which seeks to end the rift between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. He conveyed that Al-Burhan requested the Turkish envoy to inform Erdoğan of Sudan's positive reception to the proposal.

Describing the Turkish initiative as significant, Yusuf expressed hope that it would lead to genuine efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.

This development follows Erdoğan's phone call on December 13, during which he informed Al-Burhan of Turkey's willingness to mediate in the conflict between Sudan and the UAE.

The Sudanese military has accused the UAE of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been engaged in fierce battles against the army since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and contributing to what the United Nations describes as one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history.

The UAE has denied any allegations of providing weapons or military equipment to either side in the conflict, as stated in previous communications from the Gulf state.

As violence escalates in Sudan, hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in recent weeks, with both warring factions seeking a decisive military victory amid a lack of political solutions to end the ongoing war.
