MASAM Project Removes Over 477,000 Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance in Yemen

The MASAM Project, part of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, announced on January 6, 2025, that its teams have successfully removed 477,583 landmines, unexploded munitions, and improvised explosive devices since the project began.

Osama Al-Qusaibi, the Director General of the MASAM Project, provided this update in a statement released by the MASAM media office, which was obtained by "Barran Press." He noted that since the project's inception, teams have cleared 316,862 unexploded munitions and 8,184 improvised explosive devices.

The report indicated that the teams have dismantled 145,887 anti-tank mines and 6,690 anti-personnel mines, underscoring that the engineering teams have managed to clear approximately 63,678,113 square meters of land contaminated with mines and explosives.

According to UN reports, the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization, has planted around two million landmines in various regions, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, predominantly among women and children. rights reports accuse the Houthis of "turning Yemen into the largest minefield in history" after their deployment of over two million mines. Rights organizations have repeatedly urged the group to provide maps of the landmines they have laid to assist demining organizations in their efforts.
