On Friday, January 10, 2025, a bus caught fire while waiting in line to refuel with gas in Taiz, southwestern Yemen. Eyewitnesses reported that the 12-passenger bus, driven by a young boy, was parked at a gas station in Wadi Al-Qadi when the flames erupted.
According to witnesses who spoke to Barran Press, the driver escaped unharmed, and there were no reported injuries or significant damage beyond the bus fire itself. Footage captured by Bran Press shows community members rushing to extinguish the flames using water trucks to prevent further damage to other buses in line.
This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns as bus operators increasingly convert their vehicles from traditional fuel to gas, often using makeshift methods without proper safety equipment or high-quality materials. The Taiz Traffic Police have issued a warning to vehicle owners using gas fuel systems, emphasizing the importance of purchasing gas systems from authorized manufacturers and acquiring a 4-kilogram fire extinguisher.
Furthermore, the police advised against using household gas cylinders for vehicles, whether for public or private transport, due to the significant risk they pose to road users and public transport. Authorities have threatened to launch enforcement campaigns against violators.
