Egyptian YouTuber Ahmed Al-Badawi recently disclosed his detention by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels during a visit to Sanaa in early January. The Houthi militia held Al-Badawi for three days on charges of espionage and supporting homosexuality, he stated.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel following his release and deportation from Yemen, Al-Badawi recounted his harrowing experience. He had entered Yemen through Oman, traveling via Al-Mahrah, Mukalla, and Seiyun as part of his global travelogue, which has documented his journeys across 77 countries. However, his planned three-day stay in Sanaa was abruptly interrupted by his detention by the Houthi authorities.
Al-Badawi, a renowned Egyptian traveler with over 1.1 million YouTube subscribers, is known for documenting his journeys and sharing his experiences with the world. He emphasized that his visit to Yemen aimed to "showcase the country's beauty and change its stereotypical image."
He pointed out that he intentionally avoided discussing politics, considering himself a traveler, not a political commentator.
Al-Badawi ultimately decided to publish the video to address the rumors circulating about his experience in Sanaa.
