Ambush Sparks Tribal Clashes in Shabwah

A deadly ambush in Shabwah's Nisab district on Wednesday has ignited tribal clashes.  A woman was killed and her daughter critically injured when their car was mistakenly targeted.

Local sources told Barran Press that the ambush was intended for Al Marfed family and was carried out by members of the Al Jazi' bin Salem family (Marazeq tribe).  However, the attack struck the vehicle of Mohammed Dararah bin Khalil instead, killing his wife, who belonged to the Al Hussein bin Suhail family, and wounding his daughter.

The misdirected attack triggered fighting between the Al Hussein bin Suhail and Al Jazi' bin Salem families in Al-Hanak, Nisab.  The clashes raged for approximately 12 hours.

Tribal leaders, including Sheikh Lahmar Ali Lassoud, intervened and brokered an eight-day truce.

Shabwah governorate, controlled by the Southern Transitional Council, is grappling with a surge in retaliatory violence, exacerbated by the limited capacity of local authorities to effectively address these tribal disputes.
