The Media Freedom Observatory documented 19 media freedom violations in Yemen throughout February. The Iran-backed Houthis, designated as a terrorist group by many Western nations, were responsible for 14 of these incidents.
According to a report seen by Barran Press, the Yemeni government and other entities in its controlled areas accounted for the remaining five violations, spanning the governorates of Aden, Al-Dhalea, Taiz, and Hadramout.
The report also noted that a Houthi-affiliated specialized criminal court in Sana'a rejected an appeal from Taha Al-Maamari’s lawyer challenging a death sentence and asset confiscation order issued on September 24, 2024. Additionally, on February 4, 2025, a Houthi court in Sana'a sentenced 14 journalists, photographers, and Yemen Digital employees on charges widely regarded as fabricated.
These incidents follow a pattern of abuses, including prior death sentences issued against journalists Yahya Al-Jubaihi, Tawfiq Al-Mansouri, Abdul Khaleq Imran, Akram Al-Walidi, and Harith Humaid, underscoring ongoing media freedom violations in Houthi-controlled regions.
