The Yemeni government said that the war sparked by the Iran-backed Houthis has cost the country over $250 billion—more than half its national income.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi outlined the conflict’s severe toll, including a collapsing national currency, rampant inflation, and an 80% unemployment rate. He stressed the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy amid these challenges.
The government appealed for greater international assistance in economic, developmental, humanitarian, and service sectors, with Al-Saadi underscoring the need for a strategic partnership to end the Houthi coup and restore state institutions.
The statement also welcomed the US State Department’s designation of the Houthis as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization," calling it a vital move to curb their threats. The Yemeni government pledged support for enforcing this designation and urged the international community to adopt similar measures to disrupt Houthi funding and arms supplies.
