Yemen's PLC Faces Deepening Political, Economic, and Security Challenges, Report Finds

Barran Press

The Mokha Center for Strategic Studies has released its 2024 annual report, shedding light on the persistent political deadlock and internal divisions within Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council (PLC). Published on Wednesday, the report provides a detailed analysis of the country’s political, economic, and security landscape, highlighting key developments and emerging threats.

Political Deadlock and Internal Tensions

The report underscores the PLC’s failure to foster unity among its members, with escalating tensions between the council and the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which has consolidated its control over Aden and other southern regions. Meanwhile, the Iran-backed Houthis have intensified their military activities in the Red Sea, using “resistance axis” rhetoric to expand their influence both domestically and internationally. The group has also escalated crackdowns on civil society, targeting activists, journalists, and opposition voices.

Economic Decline and Foreign Dependence

Yemen’s economic outlook remains dire, with currency depreciation, rising inflation, and an increasing reliance on foreign aid. The report highlights Saudi Arabia’s critical role in preventing financial collapse, but warns that without sustainable economic reforms, living conditions will continue to deteriorate. The prolonged economic crisis has led to widespread hardship, exacerbating poverty and unemployment.
