German prosecutors announced Thursday the arrest of a Yemeni man accused of joining the Houthi rebels in his homeland and briefly engaging in combat with the group. The individual, identified only as Hussein H. in compliance with German privacy regulations, was apprehended in Dachau, a town near Munich, according to AP.
Federal prosecutors allege that Hussein H. was a member of a foreign terror organization during his youth. The accusations detail that he allegedly joined the Houthi movement in October 2022, where he underwent ideological training followed by an intensive three-month period of military training. In early 2023, he is believed to have briefly participated in fighting for the group within Yemen’s Marib region, a key battleground in the ongoing conflict.
A judge has since ordered Hussein H. to remain in custody as authorities prepare for a possible indictment. Prosecutors did not disclose information regarding when or how he entered Germany.
The Houthi movement, which controls significant portions of Yemen, has drawn international attention recently for its repeated missile attacks targeting Israel and its disruptive actions against international shipping in the Red Sea. The group has publicly framed these actions as a response to Israel’s ongoing offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
