The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance (MSAM) announced today the removal of 1,504 mines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs planted by the Houthi group across Yemen in the past week. The Houthis are internationally designated as a terrorist organization.
This brings MSAM's total for May (through May 23) to 5,567 unexploded ordnance and 132 anti-tank mines cleared. The organization has also cleared 739,545 square meters of contaminated land this month in liberated areas.
Since June 2018, MSAM has demined over 67 million square meters in a vital humanitarian operation aimed at protecting civilians.
UN reports indicate the Houthis have planted approximately two million mines, causing over 20,000 civilian casualties, primarily women and children. Rights groups accuse the Houthis of creating the world's largest minefield and continue to demand minefield maps from the group.
