Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi on Wednesday for his first official visit to Moscow. Putin underscored the "successfully developing" century-long relationship between their nations, which began with diplomatic ties in 1928.

"There's much to discuss," Putin said, noting $400 million in current trade and promising sectors like agriculture, fishing, mining, and energy. He also highlighted the recent reopening of the Russian embassy in Yemen, which closed after Houthi forces seized Sanaa.

Putin pointed to a legacy of cooperation, including the establishment of significant industrial and infrastructural projects in Yemen, such as a still-operational deep-water port. He also congratulated al-Alimi on the 35th anniversary of Yemeni unity and expressed hope for a swift resumption of the joint intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation.

The Russian president emphasized educational ties, with nearly 1,500 Yemenis studying in Russia, 400 of whom receive free tuition. "This is a very important area," he stated, stressing its role in training personnel and fostering interpersonal connections vital for broader collaboration.

Putin also noted ongoing cooperation on the international stage and invited al-Alimi to the "Russia-Arab World" summit in Moscow this October, hoping it would bolster Russia-Arab relations.
According to Yemen's official Saba news agency, their bilateral talks focused on strengthening cooperation and coordinating stances on shared interests. Putin reportedly reaffirmed Russia's commitment to supporting Yemen's security, stability, and peace, reflecting the strong historical ties built on friendship and mutual respect.

Al-Alimi briefed Putin on the Yemeni situation, expressing hopes for his visit's outcomes, coinciding with the 97th anniversary of close bilateral relations. He lauded Russia's steadfast support for the Yemeni people and their legitimate government, referencing an enduring legacy of economic, political, military, educational, and cultural cooperation.
Al-Alimi's visit to Russia began yesterday, Tuesday, at Putin's invitation. Official sources indicated the trip is part of the Yemeni leadership's active diplomatic efforts to strengthen international unity regarding Yemen, aiming to alleviate the suffering of its people and achieve state restoration, security, stability, peace, and development.
